Property market activity drives Birmingham growth

The last coach will leave Birmingham's Digbeth coach station at 7.30pm on 12 November signalling the beginning of a landmark re-development of one of the most neglected areas of Birmingham city centre.

All around the station the city's eastside development continues apace and last week permission was granted for what will become Birmingham's tallest building. This rapid geographical development has brought with it a sea change at the city's legal property departments, according to Kevin Nagle, Shakespeare Putsman's head of property.

Writing for The Lawyer he said: "The work flowing into Birmingham's property departments from a multitude of national developer clients and financial institutions has lead to a radical restructuring at many of the city's law firms. Redevelopments like those planned in Digbeth, the ICC, Mailbox and Bull Ring have created a demand for specialised commercial property services in Birmingham and consequently many of the city's firms are now choosing to present their property services as their 'flagship' departments.

"Shakespeare Putsman is among those who regard property as a crucial part of its plans for the future. Our residential development team alone transacts sales and purchases in excess of £800m a year for an impressive portfolio of national clients such as developers Barratt Homes, McCarthy & Stone and Cofton; and retailers such as Julian Graves and Whittard of Chelsea."
